New ID System: Masked Pigeon Codes

3/16/2026

We are starting to send out the first Pigeon Info emails to the fanciers, which include photos of the pigeons. Some of you may have noticed a new piece of information included in those emails – something we are using for the first time this season: Masked Pigeon Codes.

As stated in the Tender 2026, we will use a pigeon coding system this season. The code for each pigeon is generated automatically by the system.

Tender extract:
"This season, the pigeons' ring numbers will not appear on the website/ranking list. Every pigeon will get a code upon arrival in the AviRings Derby lofts. The decoding system is known to the owner, and after the last race, the coding system will be removed."

How can you recognize your pigeons?

When you log into your AviRings account, you are be able to see the original ring numbers of your pigeons, together with their masked codes.

To make it easier for you to recognize your pigeons, you can set a nickname for each pigeon in your account.
The nickname will appear next to the system code on the livestream and in the results.

Why did we introduce a coding system?

In previous seasons, many derby pigeons were captured and never released. Because the pigeon’s ring number and owner information were visible on our website, the motivation to release or report a found pigeon was often very low.

The coding system is our step toward:

  • protecting the identity of pigeons
  • reducing the risk of pigeons being kept
  • ensuring equal treatment for all pigeons

After the final race, the coding system will be removed.
